Dos and Don’ts of Dumpster Rentals

Dumpster rental is, without a doubt, the most terrific way to handle debris. Renting a roll-off eases the baggage on your waste management budget and project timeline. The Bin There Dump That’s rental process is super quick, but there are simple things you need to know before renting. There are crucial dos and don’ts of dumpster rentals, and we are here to give you all the information.

Do plan for a dumpster container.

If you have a residential home cleanout coming up or a remodel, it is best to plan for a dumpster at least a couple of weeks early. Prepare a space for the roll-off and schedule delivery a week in advance.

Do schedule the right dumpster size.

Book the right dumpster size according to the amount of debris you want to haul. We are proud to have five different dumpster sizes from four to twenty cubic yards. With the ideal roll-off, you will not have to stress over swap outs and delays.

Do book your dumpster early.

The chances of last-minute dumpster rental bookings working out for you are slim to none. Do order your dumpster ahead of time so you can have it in a timely fashion. Your dumpster rental needs time to plan for logistics, and sometimes they may be fully-booked to offer you a last-minute dumpster. Ask for drop off options and see if the rental company does delivery and pickups.

Do choose a residential friendly dumpster.

Whether you need rental services for a commercial construction site or a residential yard cleanup, you need a driveway/yard friendly dumpster. This is a dumpster that maneuvers tight spaces and rolls off without wrecking your driveway. Also, they create less noise during delivery and pickup. We use mini trucks to transport containers and place boards on your driveway to protect it from damage.

Do stick to the dumpster rental terms.

Dumpster rentals have easy to read and follow rental terms that bind your contract. Follow these terms to avoid extra costs. An example is that a rental company may have terms on prohibited junk.

Do get a rental quote for your project.

Request a dumpster rental quote to know the overall cost of renting a dumpster for your project. These price quotes are free, and you can compare costs with other rentals to get the most competitive rate.

Don’t overfill or overload your roll-off dumpster.

Overfilling and overloading a dumpster are used interchangeably, and exceeding a dumpster limit is not safe. Overfilling means putting in excess debris that overflows on the sides and can easily fall on transit, while overloading means that the weight of your trash in the dumpster is beyond the limit. Overloading or overfilling can attract overage fees, and most dumpster rentals may not accept to haul the dumpster with excess waste.

Don’t toss in hazardous garbage in the dumpster.

Hazardous garbage is anything that can pose health risks and harm the environment. Discuss with your dumpster rental about harmful waste and see if they offer a solution. Don’t throw in hazardous junk in the dumpster, no matter the size of the trash. At Bin There Dump That, we follow landfill guidelines on hazardous waste. Calls us if you are stuck with particular debris.

Don’t schedule a roll-off without estimating your debris.

Ordering a garbage roll-off blindly without estimating the size of the debris you want to haul may set you on a bumpy ride. Work with a dumpster rental that knows how to visualize your project’s scope accurately and can put you with the right-size solution. Knowing the debris estimate will help you budget and do the hauling once.

Proper Paint Disposal

Can I put paint in my dumpster rental?

While many of us are taking this time off to clean out our garages and sheds, one question that we are asked regularly is if we are able to accept paint in our dumpsters. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept paint unless the can has been dried out. The reason for this is quite simple; paint is considered a toxic/hazardous material and is not able to be disposed of at the local dump unless several steps are taken for proper paint disposal.

How to Safely Dispose of Paint

In order to properly dispose of latex paint so you can toss it in your dumpster rental, just follow a few easy steps recommended by Lowe’s:

  1. Add equal parts kitty litter to paint in the can. If the can is more than half-way full, you can pour it into a different container. If there is a very small amount, you can simply remove the lid and let it dry on its own.
  2. Stir in the kitty litter and allow it to thicken so that it will not spill. It should sit for about an hour.
  3. Throw the dried paint in the can and in the garbage. As always, keep paints and other hazardous materials out of reach of children and pets.

Other Options for Proper Paint Disposal

Another option is to purchase a commercial paint hardener which can be found in hardware stores or online. If you have oil-based paint or would prefer to donate the paint, you can simply drop it off here in Pinellas County and here in Hillsborough County. Just be sure to call ahead to confirm hours of operation prior to arrival as some sites are closed due to COVID-19.

Should you have any questions about what other items are prohibited from the dumpster, please feel free to call us at 727-475-1080 where one of our expert dumpster consultants is able to assist.

Dumpster Sharing

Dumpster Sharing

Now more than ever, some of us are looking for more ways to save money. In some instances, we’ve heard of neighbors splitting the cost of a dumpster and using it for their various projects.  For example, maybe both you and your neighbor are cleaning out your respective garages, and have decided to split the cost of a dumpster. We can place the bin in one neighbor’s driveway or even between both homes. Our trucks are small and set up to easily maneuver in tight areas. We’ll even provide a complimentary driveway protection system so that our bins never sit directly on the pavement thereby preventing any damage.

COVID-19’s Impact

It’s no doubt that the past few months have been challenging due COVID-19. While many Americans are stuck at home and unable to work, many have chosen to spend the time cleaning and organizing their house. Whether it be landscaping, decluttering garages or sheds, or just finally cleaning out closets, many people are increasing their garbage loads by about 30%. Unfortunately, some municipalities have suspended yard waste collection or decreased recycling pick-up. They are doing so in order to protect sanitation workers from the risk of virus exposure. But dumpster sharing can be a great solution for you and your neighbors right now.

Tampa Bay Recycling

Understanding Recycling in Tampa Bay

Many people aren’t sure how to handle their Tampa Bay recycling. According to a recent article from Waste Today Magazine, Florida recently passed legislation stating that “haulers are not required to transport items that are defined by the local community as ‘contaminated recycling materials,’ and MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities) would not be required to process these materials. While MRFs can handle some nonrecyclables, excessive or consistent contamination can generate additional costs related to sorting, processing, energy consumption and equipment repair or replacement. The law aims to reduce these costs and strengthen communication between communities and haulers or MRFs as they work to address the prominent issue of contamination in recyclables.”

Preventing Contaminated Recycling

In plain English, this means that putting items in your recycling bin that shouldn’t be recycled is costing the waste hauler money, and in effect, maybe even you as the taxpayer. Therefore, it’s important to understand what is recyclable, what isn’t, and how to dispose properly of the things that aren’t.

For example, the cardboard pizza box is recyclable, but if it has grease all over it, it no longer is. Or take a gallon of milk, for example. It’s good to recycle, but if it isn’t completely emptied and leaks, nothing in the bin is recyclable. Keep in mind that you should never bag your recyclables or toss plastic bags into the bin. These items can damage the sorting equipment.

Cleaning a Hoarder’s Home

Cleaning A Hoarder’s Home

Cleaning a hoarder’s house presents its own set of challenges. The first being how to help the hoarder cope with the anxiety of letting go of their possessions, and the second being how to decide what is worth keeping and where to start. According to recent research from Gerald Nestadt, M.D., M.P.H and Jack Samuels, Ph.D at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, hoarding affects approximately 700,000 to 1.4 million people in the US.  “Hoarding can be more about fear of throwing something away than about collection or saving. Thinking about discarding an item triggers anxiety in the hoarder, so they hang onto the item to prevent angst. Many hoarders are perfectionists. They fear making the wrong decision about what to keep and what to throw out, so they keep everything.”

Tips for Hiring a Contractor

Tips for Hiring a Contractor

When it comes to remodeling your home, there’s more to think about than the colors of the walls and the wide varieties of flooring from which you can choose. You must also consider who will be doing the project, how long it will take and if said project fits into your budget.

One of the biggest challenges in beginning the renovation process is finding a professional and licensed contractor. Although it may appear to be more cost effective by hiring someone who is unlicensed, it is illegal and could end up costing you more in the long run.

Many unlicensed contractors work without the proper insurance, and if they were to be injured on the job site, you could be considered responsible and potentially even be sued by the contractor.  This is one of the many reasons it is so important to do your research before hiring someone to make your home renovation dreams come true.
